50 year old wall paintings discovered behind Moray hotel wallpapers

Michael and Marie Murry are the owners of the Dowans Hotel in Aberlour. They had purchased it 21 months ago for their two daughters. Amazingly, this hotel turned out to be more than just hotel. Behind the wallpapers, this couple discovered old historical wall paintings. These are mainly childhood paintings.

The hotel building was built in 1888 for the owner of the nearby Cardhu distillery called John Cummings. Dowans was later acquired by Aberlour Orphanage towards the end of 1940’s before it was rechristened in 1953 as Princess Margaret Orphanage Nursery school.

Among many illustrations, children’s nursery rhymes were included. One of them is ‘There Was an Old Lady Who Lived In Her Shoe and The Cow Jumped Over the Moon, and is thought to have been painted in the 1960s. Then, there are British warships, an aero plane, and camels trekking on a desert scene. Beneath the carpet in the bar, an alphabet board and hopscotch squares were discovered. There were many such works among the discovered ones. We are posting some of them for you.
