You have heard of psychological disorders and strange obsessions in people, but living with corpses sounds insane. Some people are so attached to their spouse, offspring, or parents that they try to keep some kind of contact with them in the physical world. Such people find it difficult to accept that their dear once have departed. They can’t just move on with their life, leaving behind the dead. People keep cloths or other belongings of deceased close to them. Same phenomenon is responsible for corpse-nesting, while in some other cases, psychological conditions are responsible.
However, in rare cases, this attachment and emotional dependence on a single person takes a sickening, obsessive stage, such as living and sleeping with corpses. We have listed five such weird cases of corpse-nesting that’ll make you think about love, emotional attachment, death, obsession and insanity twice.
Carl Tanzler, Germany
The tale of Carl Tanzler’s abnormal life begins when he left his wife and children in search of new life in America. He worked as a radiological technologist at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Key West, FL. In 1927, he fell in love with Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos. He was convinced she was his true love. Elena passed away on October 1931. Carl paid for an expensive mausoleum for her body. For initial two years after her death, he used to spend nights at the mausoleum. Later, he dug her grave, and displaced the body to his unsavory laboratory that he had constructed out of a decommissioned airplane. Using wax, wires, plasters and glass eyes, he constructed a mannequin of Elena carcass. His sexual desires surpassed limits of sanity. He inserted a tube into the genital region of the cadaver so that he could perform intercourse with the corpse. He slept with the corpse for seven years before anyone knew it. Isn’t it sickening to imagine how could anyone sleep with decomposing and stinking body for seven long years? The body of Elena was later sent to Florida’s Key West cemetery.
