Nail fungus is commonly seen in adults, rather than children. The fungi need a dark and warm place to grow and thrive in and hence choose the nails. Toe nail fungus is a more common occurrence than finger nail fungus. Brittle and discolored nails are the symptoms of nail fungus. You are more likely to develop nail fungus if you have an injured nail or if you’re suffering from diabetes or have less immunity. Here are a few home remedies that’ll help you out.
Lavender oil is known for its anti-fungal properties which helps combat the fungi. It protects the nails from moisture, by giving a protective layer. Apart from getting rid of the fungus, it also helps by keeping the skin around the nails healthy. Just take a drop of lavender oil and treat the infected nail with it, and let it dry completely. Do this at least twice a day.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil helps by weakening the cell membranes of the fungi. It effectively penetrates deep into the skin and fights the fungi which is responsible for the infection. It is also beneficial in smoothening the nails and providing them a shine. Before using it, you need to be aware of the fact that it cannot be used without diluting it. Mix tea tree oil with water in the ratio 3:1. A few drops would do. Using a cotton ball, apply this to your nails, and leave it on for around 10 minutes. Scrub your nail later using a toothbrush and rinse it off with water.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is beneficial in increasing the acid levels and help combat fungi, since they thrive in alkaline environments. Its acidic nature contributes the infection from spreading. Among the many other benefits it has, its anti-fungal properties are noteworthy. Take a bowl that is large enough to hold your feet. Mix equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water in it. Soak your feet in the solution for around thirty minutes. Later, let it dry completely. Massage the nails with tea tree oil. Do this for around 2 to 4 times every day.
Baking Soda has anti-fungal properties which prevent the growth and spread of fungi. Baking soda is also efficient in balancing the pH level of the skin. Mix baking soda and water in the ratio 2:1. Combine well, forming a paste. Start by cleaning the affected nails with water. Dry it completely. Use a brush or a cotton ball to apply the paste on to the affected nails. Leave it on for around ten or fifteen minutes before you wash it off.
Coconut oil, with its numerous benefits is a great remedy for nail fungus. The lauric acid in it has anti-fungal properties, helping in combating fungi. It also has many nutrients which help in providing strength to your nails. Take some coconut oil and use it to massage your nails. Leave it and let it dry. Repeat this 2 to 3 times a day. Make sure to wash your hands after you apply it on to your nails. You could also use warm coconut oil.
