5 Home Remedies to Relieve Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, resulting in pain and stiffness that can worsen with age. It’s a condition wherein the cartilaginous tissue surrounding the joints wears away, this results in bone rubbing against bone causing pain, swelling and stiffness. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis but the 3 most common types are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. While there is no permanent cure for it, treatment can help in easing the pain. Here are a few ways I’ve listed to reduce pain and swelling.

Ginger has many phytonutrients which help reduce inflammation and provide relief from pain. It also reduces the production of leukotrienes and cytokines which are indirectly responsible for arthritis. Ginger has salicylate which is converted into salicylic acid in the body which is very beneficial in reducing pain. Take a raw piece of ginger, peel it and chew it in the morning. Te get relief from pain, do this everyday.

Aloe Vera

The major ingredients found in aloe Vera plants are anthraquinone, anthracene, anthranillic acid and cinnamic acid. This plant is very effective in reducing the amount of inflammation in the joints when orally taken or applied on the area of inflammation. The constituent anthraquinone stimulates our immune system for the anti-inflammatory system. During the inflammatory response in the joints, a compound called nitric oxide is synthesised, which is responsible for the wearing away of the cartilaginous tissues. Applying aloe Vera plant extracts on the area of inflammation significantly reduces the synthesis of nitric oxide. Apply Aloe Vera gel on to the joints and massage them for a couple of minutes. Do this three times every day.

Turmeric is helpful in treating the symptoms of arthritis as it contains curcumin, which possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Turmeric inhibits a substance called NF-KB, which is responsible for causing the genes to exacerbate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Medical experts suggest that we can consume 400-600mg of turmeric a day to treat arthritis. However it’s important to note that turmeric should not be taken along with any blood thinning medications or in high doses as it’ll also thin the blood. Mix turmeric with warm milk and drink before going to bed every day.

Epsom salt

The main components of Epsom salt are the magnesium and sulfate. Epsom salt is most effective when used in your bath. When the Epsom salt bath is taken it has been observed that the heat generated in the water helps increase the circulation of the blood and reduces the swelling and inflammation caused in arthritis. Magnesium, which is highly essential to our body, is known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties. But it cannot be absorbed easily into the digestive system if taken in the form of supplements, but the magnesium present is easily absorbed by our body while taking an Epsom salt bath.

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV contains magnesium which helps the bones to absorb calcium, providing them with strength. The anti-oxidants in ACV prevent tissue and cell damage. It also contains mallic acid, acetic acid and pectin which help get rid of toxins from your body. It is beneficial in dissolving the acid crystals in the joints and hence reduces pain. Add 3 teaspoons of ACV to 8 ounces of water and consume this thrice a day before meals. Do this every day.
